Hi! My name is Em and my boyfriend and I have been on this journey since 2019. Using slow fashion practices Pixie is on a mission to change the fashion industry to be more sustainable, accessible, and affordable. We only use second-hand garments in our collections, which keeps them out of landfills. Nothing you see on our site is new, mass produced, or bought in bulk.
Each piece is thrifted by us, embroidered by us and ends up being a 1 of 1. By offering sizes XS through 5XL we encourage everyone to the idea of having a more sustainable closet. And most of our garments end up being high quality “name brand” garments because people will really wear a piece one or two times and discard it. Everyone should have access to and be able to afford to shop sustainable clothing.
The amount of clothes we waste every year is insane. Every year there are 92 million tons of clothing waste discarded every year. To put that in perspective that is like filling a garbage truck full of clothes and dumping it in a landfill…every second. That is equivalent to over 31 million dump trucks full of clothes being dumped every year.
Aside from the waste that has increased, so has the production. From 2000 to 2015 clothing sales have doubled from 100 to 200 billion units a year. This production is fueled by significant water consumption, massive carbon emissions, horrible labor conditions for people, and microplastics infecting our oceans from fabrics like nylon and polyester. The fast fashion industry as whole is inefficient, harmful and unsustainable. The only way we are going to be able to fix this for our children and future generations is if we SLOW DOWN.
We are passionate about the planet and the future for all of us. By slowing down fashion we hope to make a huge impact one day. To get there we need the support from every single person. We are all in this together and it is going to take all of us making a conscience effort to live more sustainable lives to make a difference. Building a community of slow fashion lovers can bring about big things. We want positive change to come from pixie and are excited to see what the future holds!
